A Longford man has appeared in court after allegedly telling a garda that she and her colleagues "should be shot" like her "friend in Castlerea".
Longford District Court heard that the man was very intoxicated at the time of the incident, and he personally apologised to the Garda in court for making the comments about the late Detective Garda Colm Horkan, who was killed last week.
Longford District Court heard that the accused had caused a disturbance outside the doors of the District Court itself this morning and was subsequently told to leave the area.
However, while doing so, he spoke to Garda Rachel Dillon and her colleagues, allegedly saying to her as relayed in court by the Garda "we should be shot like our friend in Castlerea" and "I'm going to get you shot".
The court heard that the accused had been sober for a number of weeks, but began drinking heavily last night and was still intoxicated when the incident occurred this morning.
He was charged with threatening and abusive language, as well as failing to comply with a Garda's direction.
He apologised to the garda in court, as well as the Garda Commissioner, and said that he just wanted to go home to his bed and Judge Seamus Hughes said the comments were made after the death of Detective Colm Horkan which he described as being still "raw and sensitive".
The accused has 26 previous convictions and Judge Hughes warned him that he would need to bring €350 into court with him for his next court appearance on September 1st when the case will be finalised.]
