One of three men involved in a 2019 prison stabbing has been sentenced to a further two years in jail for his role in the serious assault.
Stephen Mulvey, who's currently serving a sentence at Castlerea Prison for an unrelated matter, appeared before Roscommon Circuit Court yesterday.
Mr Mulvey pleaded guilty to a section 3 assault over his involvement in an attack on Thomas Sweeny in the recreation Yard of Castlerea Prison in March of 2019.
Mr Sweeny received 'disfiguring facial scaring' following an attack that 'opened his face with a knife' according to Judge Francis Commerford.
Stephen Mulvey claimed to investigating Gardai that he had no memory of the incident when interviewed due to him being on sleeping tablets.
However, when shown CCTV footage of the attack, he identified himself saying he was not in his 'right mind at the time'.
According to the court, the accused has a long history of drug and traffic related offenses, but few violent charges.
Taking into account Mr. Mulvey's cooperation and his secondary role in the incident, Judge Commerford sentenced him to 38 months imprisonment, with the first 12 months to coincide with the remainder of his current prison sentence.
