The Ukrainian national accused of a serious assault in Ballaghderreen, which led to the death of another man, has been released on bail. Yevhen Shutko (46) was charged with assault causing serious harm to Jordon Newin on New Year's Day. Yevhen Shutko was charged at a previous sitting of Roscommon District Court following an alleged assault in the early hours of New Year's Day. Following the alleged incident, Jordon Nevin, aged in his 30s, was transferred to Sligo University Hospital and then to Beaumont Hospital, where he later died.
Garda Brendan McGrath previously told the court that Mr Shutko claimed self defence when charged with the offence. Garda McGrath told today's sitting in Ballaghaderreen that he anticipated directions from the DPP shortly in relation to the matter. He objected to bail.
Judge James Faughnan said that with no further charges forthcoming he would release Mr Shutko on bail subject to conditions. He ordered that €3,000 be lodged in court and that Mr Shutko surrender his passport. He will now appear at the next sitting of Ballaghaderreen District Court next month.
