Man charged with assault in Ballaghaderreen due in court

Jordon Nevin, who was aged in his 30s, passed away following the incident in the early hours of New Year's Day.

A man charged with assault causing serious harm in connection with the death of another man following an incident in Ballaghaderreen is due in court later today.

Jordon Newin, who was aged in his 30s, passed away following the incident in the early hours of New Year's Day.

46-year-old Yevhen Shutko, who lives in Loughglynn after coming to Ireland nearly two years ago, is due to appear at a sitting of Ballaghaderreen District Court this afternoon.

Ukrainian national Yevhen Shutko, was charged with assault causing serious harm at a sitting of Roscommon District Court last Sunday.

The court was told there was an alleged serious assault in Ballaghaderreen, in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Following the incident, Jordon Newin was brought to Sligo University Hospital and later transferred to Beaumont Hospital, where he later passed away.

Garda Brendan McGrath told the court Mr Shutko was charged last Saturday night, to which he replied: 'It was definitely not intentional, I was defending myself.'

The court heard further charges may be forthcoming, given that Mr Nevin has now died, as the state awaits directions from the DPP.

Mr Shutko was remanded in custody to appear at today's sitting of Ballaghaderreen District Court.
