A man is to appear in court today charged with a serious assault close to St Mel's Cathedral in the early hours of Monday morning.
A man in his early 20s received serious injuries in the incident and was brought to the Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar for treatment.
His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

An area of St Mel's Cathedral was sealed off for a time yesterday to allow a Garda technical examination of the scene.
Gardaí in Longford arrested a man in his 20s yesterday evening and charged him with assault causing harm.
The accused is set to appear at Longford District Court today.
