Gardaí are currently at the scene of a serious single vehicle road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 12:45am this morning on the M6 Eastbound after Junction 8, near Athlone.
The sole occupant of the car, a male in his 20s, was taken to Tullamore Hospital for treatment of his injuries, which are believed to be serious.
The road is currently closed between Junction 8 and Junction 7 Eastbound for a technical examination.

While local diversions are in place, it is expected the road will reopen shortly.
Investigations are ongoing.
