The Albert Reynolds Peace park in Longford Town is set to expand into neighbouring land in a major upgrade to the popular site.
Better known as 'The Mall', the amenity is located in the centre of Longford Town along the banks of the Camlin River.
The park features walkways, playgrounds, exercise equipment and a bowling green along with a leisure centre and swimming pool.
At a recent meeting of Longford County Council, the executive confirmed that a deal had been reached to purchase the land behind the leisure centre.
The site, known as Dempsey's Land, is a 14 acre site between the Mall and the Abbeycartron Football Pitches.
7 acres of that site will now be used to create an expansion of the park.
Local Councillor Peggy Nolan says it's vital that the land is used for the Mall expansion and not taken in any government 'land grab' for social housing.
Councillor Nolan says that the new parkland and services will compensate for any changes to the existing Park:
The Fine Gael Councillor is also calling on stakeholders, clubs and other interested parties to highlight what they want to see in the new park area.
