Major rise in 14-day Covid rate across the country

There’s been a significant increase in the 14 day incidence rate of Covid 19.

It comes as the World Health Organisation says the Government’s Level 3 strategy is risky and it’s hard to tell if it’s the right path.

There has been a 38 per cent increase in the 14 day incidence rate of Covid 19.

New figures shows the national total now stands at 158.5 per 100 thousand of the population.

And as figures up North surge, so too do the counties that border it.

Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal have a rate of infection of more than 300 per 100,000 of the population.

221 people are currently in hospital nationwide with Covid 19 with 30 in intensive care.

The Government and the National Public Health Emergency Team have clashed over the coronavirus strategy with Ministers opting a less restrictive measures than Tony Holohan wanted.

Dr David Nabarro from the World Health Orginsation says he doesn’t know which approach is right.

The Chief Medical Officer will update the country on the latest figures and strategy at a press conference this evening.
