Mairead McGuinness to be put forward as nominee for EU Commissioner role

Mairead McGuinness and Andrew McDowell are to be put forward as nominees to replace Phil Hogan as European Commissioner.

The Taoiseach will make a formal announcement later today.

The President of the European Commission will ultimately decide which of the candidates gets the job.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar says he's glad Simon Coveney didn't put his name forward in the end.
