A Longford senator is hoping to get government support to provide equality and treatment access for people with autism.

Micheal Carrigy has drafted an Autism Spectrum Empowerment Bill which he hopes will provide equality of opportunity and treatment for persons with autism.

He has also called on the government to right the wrong done to families of people with autism after recent revelations that the Department of Health used information from private doctor consultations to build files on children with autism involved in legal actions against the State.

The Ballinalee native believes people with wide range of disabilities, including autism, find it difficult to access basic services in Ireland and that needs to change.
