People in Longford are being urged to be on the lookout for the spread of an invasive species which has been reported in the county.

The National Biodiversity Data Centre has recorded examples of the Greater White-toothed Shrew on the southern border of the county with the distinctive animals set to spread further in the coming months.

They are not harmful to humans, but having arrived here almost twenty years ago, and after being first recorded in 2008, they can be a threat to the native pygmy shrew.
