An unauthorised gathering at a Longford memorial for the War of Independence was dispersed by Gardaí yesterday afternoon.

Local Gardaí attended the site of the Clonfin Ambush near Granard following reports of a group breaching public health regulations.

The site is a memorial for the second-largest engagement of the War of Independence, which saw a local IRA flying column successfully ambush two truckloads of British Auxiliaries 100 years ago tomorrow.

Gardaí spoke to the six people in attendance at yesterday's unauthorised centenary event, who are not believed to be from the area, and a file is now being prepared for the DPP in relation to any potential breaches of Public Health Regulations.

A car driven by one of those at the site was also seized under Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act, for lack of tax, insurance or a valid NCT.

*** The Clonfin Commemoration Committee wish to clarify that they were not involved in the unathoritised event on Sunday and look forward to hosting their own on-line event to remember the events of February 2nd 1921 later this week.***
