A Longford Fianna Fáil councillor says she was 'surprised' by former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's remarks about immigration.
Nigerian-born Uruemu Adejinmi, who became Ireland's first black female mayor in 2021, says Mr. Ahern's comments about African migrants were not 'good to hear.'
The former Taoiseach has faced criticism for saying he had concerns about people arriving here from 'the Congo' as well as 'the next generation of Muslims'.
Mr. Ahern's comments were covertly recorded while he was canvassing for Fianna Fáil ahead of next week's Dublin Central by-election.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, councillor Adejinmi said she was contacted by her constituents expressing concerns about his remarks.
However, she said she is pleased he has apologised and made clear that he was 'against the victimisation of migrants.'
