One of the Shannonside region's most historical sites has been purchased by Longford County Council.
The Granard Motte, which was built in the 12th century is the highest surviving structure of its kind in Ireland and contains a world famous statue of St Patrick which was erected at its summit in 1932.
Last year Fáilte Ireland announced multi million euro funding for a major tourist attraction and victor centre incorporating the history of the area which was described as a 'Norman Heritage Park.'

The local authority has been engaged in lengthy process to purchase the nine-acre site in recent years and a deal was finally agreed in the last 24 hours.
