Longford Council is to call on the Justice Minister to continue the tradition of an elected member to chair the new Local Community Partnership Pilot

Longford Council is to call on the Justice Minister to continue the tradition of an elected member to chair the new Local Community Partnership Pilot policing committee.

Three pilot schemes were launched last month for Longford, Waterford and Dublin's North inner city which will allow locals draw up policing plans.

The Department of Justice said the initiative is being trialled in areas picked for their crime rates, levels of deprivation, and population densities.

Longford Fianna Fail Councillor Seamus Butler says there is concern the numbers suggested for the committees at 30 may make them too unwieldy.

He says the suggestion that they be chaired by an unelected independent person is not a good idea either…
