A Longford councillor has spoken out against Fine Gael's decision to block all independent candidates seeking a presidential nomination.
The party issued a statement instructing its councillors to endorse Heather Humphreys only in race for the Áras.
It comes as local authorities across the country are preparing to hold special meetings which will hear from independent candidates seeking their support.
In the event of a nomination of a person other than ratified candidate Heather Humphreys, the Fine Gael local authority members are whipped to oppose it.
