Local unemployment levels grow in past year

Nationally, there are 18,497 people currently unemployed in the country.

Unemployment levels in the Shannonside region have grown over the last year according to the CSO.

Figures reveal 530 more people on the live register in Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon than this time last year. Close to 6,000 people locally are unemployed as of the end of April compared to 5,459 during the same period in 2022. Of these, 647 are under the age of 25.

Leitrim saw the biggest jump in the 12 months with 351 people added to the register, bringing the total in the county to 1,739. That's followed by an increase in Roscommon where a further 118 people became unemployed over the last year making the rate 2,065. Longford had 2,124 people on the live register in April 2022, with that figured growing to 2,185 as of last month.
