A local Sinn Féin TD has raised the issue of the lack of Garda presence in Ballaghaderreen to the Taoiseach. Roscommon-Galway TD Claire Kerrane spoke in the Dáil yesterday and called for a rural Garda plan to ensure an adequate allocation of Gardaí in the town.
It comes following a protest in Ballaghaderren attended by hundreds including Kerrane, organised after a teenager was allegedly assaulted in the Roscommon town. Speaking in the Dáil, the Sinn Féin TD expressed the need for enhanced security measures in the face of a surge in rural crime:
