A local TD says she is 'utterly appalled' by the number of children attending adult emergency departments for self-harm and suicide ideations.
A response to a Parliamentary Question revealed children as young as 14 are being admitted to adult emergency departments.
The figures also show that the number of children in those departments has increased in the HSE region of Dublin and the Midlands, from 289 in 2023 to 296 in 2024.
Longford-Westmeath TD Sorca Clarke says placing children who are experiencing a mental health crisis in adult EDs is dangerous and as they are not equipped to meet their needs.
She explained there needs to be a rapid expansion of the CAMHS crisis response team:
