A local Senator has called for a debate in the new year focused on water quality.
Longford-Westmeath Senator Paul Daly has welcomed the nitrates derogation extension, but says discussions must address the responsibilities of local authorities and Irish Water, not just farmers.
Senator Daly said farmers are repeatedly blamed for poor water quality despite being willing to meet the new conditions attached to the derogation.
He insists that problems within Irish Water and local authorities also need to be tackled:
