Local politicians have been paying tribute to Pope Francis following his death this morning.
Pope Francis passed away at 7:35am following his battle with pneumonia and his "complex" health conditions.
The "People's Pope" appeared just yesterday to crowds of well-wishers at St. Peter's Basilica to give his Easter blessing.
President Michael D. Higgins has expressed his condolences, praising the late pontiff for his work on "vital issues of our time - such as global hunger and poverty, of climate change and justice, of the plight of migrants and indigenous peoples and of the fundamental necessity of global peace and diplomacy."
