Research from Transparency International, published in the Irish Independent claimed Ciaran Mullooly earned €5,000 while an MEP.

A local MEP says a newspaper report claiming he earned money as a freelance journalist while serving in Brussels is incorrect.

The Midlands North West MEP had previously enjoyed a lenghty career in journalism before retiring from RTE in 2021.

He was elected to the European Parliament last year, picking up over 57,000 first preference votes.

Fellow Midlands North West MEP, Nina Carberry declared income arising from her firm, Nina Carberry Racing Ltd, which she wholly owns.

While Luke 'Ming' Flanagan, Maria Walsh and Barry Cowen declared no extra income from outside interests.

Speaking to Shannonside FM, Ciaran Mullooly said he'd declared the income prior to taking up office:
