Local MEP Maria Walsh has announced she is 16 weeks pregnant through IVF.
The 38-year-old, who is gay and currently single, conceived through fertility and sperm donation treatments.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio 1 with Brendan O'Connor, the Fine Gael politician said she hopes her personal journey can help other single women and those who are LGBTQI+ to become mothers.
The Midlands-North West representative confirmed she will be taking maternity leave later this year but will return to her work in the European Parliament in the following months.
