Fire has broken out for a 4th day running at bog and woodland on the Longford Leitrim Border. Units of Longford and Leitrim Fire Services have been fighting the fire at Bohey/Cloonaugh Bog close to Drumlish Village since Sunday evening. The fire has been contained and put out each day, but has re-ignited several times over the last few days due to dry weather and high winds.
Bog fires are known to burn and smoulder underground and can easily re-spark in the right circumstances. The fire spread to forestry alongside the bog yesterday evening leading to significant damage. Acting Chief Fire Officer with Longford Council, Tomás O'Maonaigh says fire fighters are facing extremely difficult conditions:
