Local council could receive power station rates top-up in 2022

Longford County Council could receive a once-off payment to make up for the loss of rates.

The government is to consider compensating Longford County Council with over one million euro again this year as a result of the closure of a local power station.

The Lough Ree power station in Lanesboro accounted for 15% of the overall rates that the local authority collected each year, until its closure in December 2020 as part of Just Transition plans.

A special-one off payment was provided to Longford and Offaly County Councils last year to offset the loss of rates due to the closure - and local TD Joe Flaherty has appealed to the government to consider a similar scheme this year.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin acknowledged the impact of their closure, and admitted that the proposal to allocate €1.4m to Longford again is something the government may examine ahead of next month's Budget.
