Local campaigner welcomes new SMA detection for newborns

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly yesterday confirmed the heel prick test offered to parents of newborns will screen for SMA starting next year.

The decision to add the detection of Spinal Muscular Atrophy to the newborn heel prick test will make a massive difference to children with the condition. That's the view of Longford campaigner Bróna Fox, who's son Donnacha was diagnosed with SMA months after his birth. While Donnacha, now two years of age, has received treatment for the condition, his parents argue that earlier intervention would have significantly reduced his symptoms.

Speaking to Let's Talk today, Bróna welcomed the decision and described the good it will do families facing the same condtion. The Edgeworthstown woman says if admisinstered early enought, new treatments are akin to a cure.
