A former senator says he would personally travel to Iraq to push for the prison release of a Roscommon resident.
Robert Pether, who lived in Elphin with his wife Desree, has been detained in Iraq since 2021 over a contract dispute between his employer and the Iraqi government.
His wife has described his condition as "unrecognisable," with Robert in poor health and suffering from cancer.
In a recent development of the case, Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs minister Simon Harris has confirmed he will meet with Desree, who has been pleading with the Irish government to help her set Robert free.
Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane and former senator Eugene Murphy have been vocal on the issue, and have been amplifying calls for the government to end the suffering of Robert and his family.
