Less than half of property refurbishment grants approved locally

The scheme provides funds to applicants who wish to renovate old and uninhabited properties.

Just under 50% of all Vacant Property Refurbishment grant applications have been approved across the region. The figures come from a per-county breakdown of data from the Saturday Independent.

The Vacant Property Refurbishment grant scheme was first launched in July 2022. The scheme provides funds to applicants who wish to renovate old and uninhabited properties.

Successful applicants have 13 months to carry out all necessary refurbishment works. Roscommon holds the highest number of applications in the Shannonside region, at 233, out of which 108 requests were approved.

In Leitrim, a total of 118 applications were made, out of which 75 were granted. Meanwhile, Longford holds the lowest number of submissions at 106, with only 43 of these approved.

According to Longford County Council, all 106 applications made to it were for rural parts of the county. A total of 226 out of 457 applications across the Shannonside region were approved, which stands at just 49% of submitted applications to the local authorities.
