Leitrim county councillors will today hear from independent candidates hoping to get on the presidential election ballot paper. A candidate must receive the backing of four local authorities to become eligible to take part in the election. A total of 24 candidates have expressed an interest in seeking a nomination from the local authority. Of these, 16 have indicated that they wish to present to the elected members.
Ten of the candidates will present in person with a further 6 indicated that they will present online. Of the 18 councillors in Leitrim, Fianna Fáil have greatest representation with 6. That's followed by 5 Independents and Sinn Féin's 4. Fine Gael, meanwhile, have 3. The action gets underway at Áras an Chontae at 11am.
