A centre in county Leitrim for adults with disabilities has received a largely positive report from the health watchdog. An unannounced inspection of Saol Beo was carried out in August, the details of which have been published this month. Saol Beo provides full-time residential support for up to three adult residents. On the day of the inspection, residents were observed to be happy and content, with active engagement in their daily lives and the local community. Staff provided good quality personal care, and residents benefited from support to maintain family connections and pursue interests. Staffing levels, training and supervision met regulatory requirements, with a competent and experienced team in place.
Several regulatory shortcomings were identified. Inspectors raised serious concerns about the centre's safeguarding practices. Some incidents and allegations of abuse were not appropriately investigated or handled promptly, and formal plans to protect residents were often lacking. As a result, the centre was judged not compliant under Protection regulations. Not all significant incidents were reported to HIQA within statutory timeframes, and some notifications contained inconsistent details compared with internal records.
