The head of Ballyhaunis fire station is calling for Castlerea’s station to reopen – eight years after it shut down.

It was discussed at a public meeting in Gortaganny in west Roscommon last night, attended by around 100 people.

Landowners want state support after their forestry was destroyed in a massive blaze last month.

Fire-fighters from Ballyhaunis helped put it out – and its station officer, Enda Caulfield, wants Castlerea’s base to reopen:

Minister Michael Healy-Rae is willing to meet a delegation from last night’s meeting.

Meeting chairman Seamus Crawley says he’s going to invite him down to the area.
