Investigation underway after six calves found dumped in Westmeath waterway

Westmeath County Council says the incident is being treated as illegal dumping, with concerns over potential risks to public health and local water quality.

A major investigation is underway in The Downs in Co. Westmeath after six calves were discovered dumped in a tributary in the Windtown area.
Westmeath County Council says the incident is being treated as illegal dumping, with concerns over potential risks to public health and local water quality.
A multi-agency investigation involving An Garda Síochána and the Department of Agriculture is now in progress.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Westmeath County Council said the failure to dispose of deceased livestock in a responsible and lawful way is "not only an environmental offence" but also "undermines good farming practices" and "poses a risk to the wider community."
Farmers are being reminded that strict regulations apply to the disposal of animal carcasses, and the public is urged to report any suspicious activity.
