Increase in students accessing Athlone food bank

Students are relying on the service to get by.

There's an increase in students in Athlone accessing the student food bank.

Chaplin Shay Casey says there could be up to 30 people seeking support from their service which runs six night a week.

It's been in operation through Tesco and Foodcloud for up to 10 years now.

Last week, organisers of the food bank at University College Cork were forced to set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds after running out of food.

Father Shay says his team keeps track of some students, mainly from overseas but some from Ireland who have no means of paying for food.

Speaking on Let's Talk today he says the shortage of accommodation is having a huge effect.
