Icy conditions force closure of Carrick-on-Shannon boardwalks

In the interest of public safety the boardwalks will reman closed for the duration of the current cold snap

Access to riverside boardwalks in Carrick-on-Shannon have been closed.

Leitrim County Council say due to icy conditions forecast for the next number of days the boardwalks at both the linear park and the quays will not be in use.

Meanwhile, Temperatures dipped as low as minus 7 degrees Celsius in parts of the midlands overnight.

Mount Dillon in Roscommon was still recording a temperature of -7 degrees celcius at 9am this morning

A Status Yellow low temperature ice warning is in place until midday.

Snow fell in parts of Kerry, Cork, Sligo and Donegal last night- with some schools in Donegal remaining closed this morning due to poor road conditions.

Met Éireann says the current Arctic airflow will bring sharp to severe frosts and icy stretches until Thursday, along with showers of hail, sleet, snow and freezing fog.
