Hundreds of people have lined the streets of Ballaghadereen this afternoon to pay their respects to Detective Colm Horkan.
A garda motorcycle escort accompanied the cortege through the town where the Mayo man spent many years working.
The hearse, led by garda motorcycle members, stopped outside the station in the town for a minute where his colleagues including Chief Supt Tony Healy and Superintendent Goretti Sheridan stood to attention.
The hearse then passed down through the town where people clapped as it made as its way to the square and beyond
Colm Horkan's remains are due to arrive at his home in Mayo later this evening.
Elsewhere, a man in his 40's remains in Garda custody in connection with the fatal shooting.
Castlerea town centre re-opened this afternoon at 3.30pm where dozens of floral tributes mark the spot where Detective Horkan was killed.
