Groundworks for a new 50-bed unit at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe are due to be completed by the middle of May next year.
The Minister for Health has confirmed to Roscommon-Galway TD Denis Naughten that the ground works will take nine months to complete with an expected finish date of 25th May 2021.
The Independent TD has expressed disappointment that the construction of the new 50 bed ward block will be delayed until the middle of next year and is calling on the government to prioritise the project.

He is hopeful that contractors will be appointed by the end of this year and says it is "imperative" that the timeline does not slip any further.
