The planned amalgamation of two Longford town secondary schools has moved a step closer.
Approval has been given for a large-scale capital development at St. Mel's College.
It is hoped to demolish a number of extensions built in the 1930’s and 1960’s, namely the single-storey, two-storey and four-storey rear extensions.
Also outlined in the application are plans for the construction of a new single-storey boiler house that will serve the school building, the chapel, and the study hall.
Last December, it was confirmed that both St. Mel's and Meán Scoil Mhuire are to join forces to become a new co-educational school, which will be called Coláiste Mel agus Mhuire.
The change is expected to accommodate up to 1,200 students on the one campus in time for the start of the 2027 academic year.
