Planning approval has been granted for a battery storage project in north Roscommon, despite strong local opposition over safety and environmental concerns.
In November 2024, Arigna LDES Limited were granted permission for the development in Arigna.
The plans include the development of 56 battery containers, the construction of a new single storey IPP building, along with new internal access roads, drainage and security fencing.
However, the Lough Allen Conservation Association lodged an appeal with An Bord Pleanála in December 2025.
The group highlighted concerns with what it says is a lack of safeguards for the public, the effect the storage system may have on the environment and the visual amenity in the area.
In its ruling, the planning authority said updated safety measures - including fire suppression systems, gas detection, and emergency response planning - were sufficient to address those concerns.
It also found that drainage and containment plans would protect the lake and surrounding environment.
Permission has been granted for 25 years, with conditions covering noise, lighting, ecological safeguards, and eventual removal of the facility when operations end.
