Gorse fires which engulfed fields and forestry in west Roscommon yesterday may have been started deliberately. That's the opinion of experienced firefighters who spent almost twelve hours battling the flames near Loughglynn. Crews from Ballaghaderreen, Boyle, Elphin, Ballyhaunis and Charlestown dealt with a number of fires in the county.
A major blaze was reported in Cloonfower at around lunchtime and up to 50 firefighters worked until midnight in order to bring it under control. Roscommon's Chief Fire Officer John Keane says homes and livelihoods were under threat. Speaking to Dan Dooner, he urged members of the public to remain vigilant:
