The Garda Water Unit premises in Athlone was officially opened earlier today. The Water Unit was established in 1964 and currently consists of two operational teams based in Athlone and Santry in Co. Dublin.
It provides support and search capability to other Garda units and outside agencies in marine environments. Sergeant Eamonn Bracken from the Athlone Garda Water Unit outlined some of the work they do:
