Roscommon County Council has confirmed that further research is to be carried out into the discovery of archaeological remains found during streetscape works in Roscommon town.
Last week contractors working on the multi-million euro enhancement project discovered "substantial walls" at the junction of Main Street and Church Street during service diversion works.
The National Monuments Service has been informed about these discoveries and the Council has confirmed that the structures are possibly the remains of a town wall or gate related to the medieval or early-modern town.
The artifacts will be recorded by the contractors on-site and a report is to be prepared following further research.
The local authority has also confirmed that a strategy is being prepared for the long-term preservation of archaeology found during the Roscommon Urban Realm Improvement Scheme.
