The Minister of State for Transport says the western rail line from Athenry to Claremorris has been given funding.
Deputy Seán Canney confirmed works will begin within the next 18 months, as part of the National Development Plan.
Speaking to Galway Bay FM News, the Independent TD for Galway East said he is looking forward to the project being delivered in the coming years through the All-Ireland rail strategy.
