Frustration over Council's failure to nominate Maria Steen

There were seven votes for, nine votes against, one abstention and one absence.

Frustration has been expressed after Maria Steen failed to receive a nomination from Leitrim County Council to contest the presidential election.

13 candidates, including the conservative campaigner addressed members last week.

Ms Steen received proposals from independent Cllr Irene Guckian Rabbitte and Fianna Fáil's Cllr Mary Bohan and Cllr Justin Warnock.

However, at Áras Chontae this afternoon, she did not receive enough support.

There were seven votes for, nine votes against, one abstention and one absence.

Councillors who voted in favour were; Cllr Mary Bohan, Cllr Paddy Farrell, Cllr Paddy O'Rourke, Cllr James Gilmartin, Cllr Justin Warnock, Cllr Irene Guckian Rabbitte and Cllr Sean McGowan.

Councillors who voted against were: Cllr Maeve Reynolds, Cllr Ita Reynolds Flynn, Cllr Padraig Fallon, Cllr Brendan Barry, Cllr Roisin Kenny, Cllr Cormac Flynn, Cllr Eddie Mitchell, Cllr Gary Prior and Cllr Enda McGloin.

Cllr Felim Gurn abstained while Cllr Enda Stenson was absent.

Speaking to Shannonside FM, Cllr Bohan says the members have denied the public a greater choice on the ballot paper:
