Four candidates will battle for Senator Gareth Scahill's seat on Roscommon County Council tonight. Fine Gael's holding a co-option convention in Castlerea. Gareth Scahill was elected to the council last June in the local elections in the Roscommon Local Electoral Area, which includes Castlerea. But he had to quit the council in February after he was appointed to the Seanad. His seat on the local authority has been vacant for the past two months. We'll know who'll replace him tonight, though.
Fine Gael's convention is taking place in Tully's Hotel at 7.30. Up to 70 party members in the Roscommon Local Electoral Area can vote. The four candidates are former councillor Michael McGreal, from Ballinlough, Castleplunkett's Ruth Connolly-Conboy, Ballintubber's Maria McCahill and Roscommon town's Robbie McConn. The winner will formally replace Scahill at the next Roscommon County Council meeting, on April 28th.
