That's according to a study carried out by transition year students in south Roscommon.

33 per cent of fifth year students are spending more than eight hours a day on their phone.

That's according to a study carried out by transition year students in south Roscommon.

Young Social Innovators from Colaiste Chiarain are running a campaign aimed at reducing phone use this Christmas.

The study also showed that 42 per cent of TY students experience headaches, sore eyes and tiredness from excessive screen time.

The students are now calling on people to 'Disconnect and Reconnect this Christmas'.

Their teacher Joseph Cogavin says the survey findings were startling:
