Galway County Council has given the green light for a €12 million extension to the emergency department at Portiuncula University Hospital.
The 310 metre square extension will see the development of nine new patient cubicles and a gynaecology treatment room.
The works also include internal refurbishment of the existing department.

It will be linked to the existing building through a new accessible reception area which will include a new paedriatric waiting area.
A reconfigured ambulance drop-off and set-down area and public entrance lobby are also included in the plans.
