Eugene Murphy would be interested in replacing Anthony Waldron on Roscommon County Council - if no one from his base in Ballintubber wants to fill the vacancy.
Independent councillor Waldron died at the age of 64 in February 9 and his seat hasn't been filled yet.
The Ballintubber community has been holding talks about the vacancy and community activist Gail Murray remains the favourite, sources say, but former Fianna Fáil TD, senator and councillor Eugene Murphy is also a possibility.
When contacted, Mr Murphy said: "I will only look for a nomination if Ballintubber don't have a candidate.
"I will not stand against a Ballintubber person."
Murphy has been out of politics since losing his Seanad seat earlier this year.
He quit Fianna Fáil before last November's general election, in which he stood unsuccessfully as an Independent.
He's described himself as a broken man:
