The Minister for the Environment has been called on to address what has been described as the "alarming" decision to remove fire services in Castlerea.

The Minister for the Environment has been called on to address what has been described as the "alarming" decision to remove fire services in Castlerea.

Senator Eugene Murphy raised the closure of the west Roscommon facility in the Seanad this morning where he claimed people had been left "aghast" at the confirmation by the CE of the local authority to shut its doors permanently.

The decision, announced at the July meeting of the local authority on Monday, came after a report into fire services in the county suggested that other tenders in the county can manage fires in Roscommon efficiently and effectively without the need for a base in Castlerea.

The Fianna Fail representative appealed to the leader of the Seanad to have the matter raised with Minister Eamon Ryan:
