A 28-year-old man, who was engaged to be married, died after taking a toxic amount of alcohol and drugs in Carrick-on-Shannon last year.
A sergeant said he was the victim of the many challenges facing society today.
This inquest took place at the coroner's court in Carrick into the death of a man just outside the town last year.
It heard he had been in a friend's house nearby from around 8pm to 9.30pm, when they talked about lots of things, including setting up a business together.
The coroner's court heard the deceased drank almost an entire 70cl bottle of Cognac in 15 to 20 minutes, with ice and no mixer.
He then returned home to where he lived with his fiancé near Carrick.
The inquest heard he became unwell, started vomiting, fell onto the floor and had a seizure.
He was initially breathing heavily for 15 minutes, the coroner's court heard, then he stopped breathing.
CPR was carried out for around half an hour, but he didn't respond and was pronounced later.
An autopsy carried out in Sligo University Hospital found he had a toxic level of drugs and alcohol in his system, including MDA and MDMA.
The autopsy report concluded the combined effect of these drugs was the main cause of his death.
Coroner Fergal Kelly returned a verdict of misadventure.
He said it was a very tragic case, involving a 28-year-old man looking forward to life with his fiancé.
Sergeant Brian Lee said he was the victim of the many challenges facing society today.
Both expressed sincere sympathy to his fiancé, who attended the inquest.]
