Emergency services are currently at the scene of a large fire which is engulfing fields and forestry near Loughglynn in west Roscommon. Fire services from Ballaghaderreen, Ballyhaunis, Boyle and Charlestown are in attendance. Around 30 to 40 firefighters have been battling the blaze in the Cloonfower area since lunchtime today.
Chief Fire Officer John Keane says a request has been made for a helicopter to help fight the fire as a containment operation continues. He says the fire service is working hard to prevent the flames reaching local homes, roads, and significant forestry plantations.
Mr Keane has advised motorists to exercise caution in the area and homeowners to keep windows and doors shut. He has also urged members of the public to avoid travelling to the area to observe the incident.
